3 RUN RALLIES IN 4th AND 5th INNINGS CAP COMEBACK WIN

A 6-4 Castros team featured veteran lefty hurler Norbert Camacho and the wiley pitcher proved tough on the Post bats early on as Castros put up a 5 spot in the top of the third and held a 6-1 lead before the Post came to bat in the bottom of the fouth. The 701ers loaded the bases with no one out and the rally was on as the Fiorillo-men came back for their 4th straight win on their way to a 7-6 victory. Charlie Archinal went the route for his 5th win of the year giving up only 2 hits over the last 4 innings while improving his 2010 log to 5-2

4th INNING IS BEGINNING OF COMEBACK

Down by 5 entering the fouth the Post loaded the bases with no one out when Matt Beck singled, went to second on an Aaron Kelly base knock and a Rick Jobin walk. Marty Tambasco, who was 7 for his last 8 at bats, was quickly down in the count at 0-2 before he got a run in when he grounded to short with Kelly out on a force play at third. After Charlie Archinal reached on a Castros miscue, Ray Fyfe swung out swinging. However, Skipper Vinny Fiorillo picked up Fyfe when he struck a 2 run single to get the Post back in the game at 6-4.

3 RUN 5th IS THE DIFFERENCE

With Archinal in cruise control the Post offense continued their resurgance against Camacho. Bobby Lopuch sparked the comeback 5th as he usually does with a ringing leadoff single. Danny Auricchio then worked out his fifth walk of the year. Shaun Krutz then launched a "Krutz Missle" for his team leading 6th double of the year as Lopuch scored with Auricchio holding third as the Post now had the lead cut to one. That deficit was short lived when the team's top rbi guy and a clutch hitter in the entire year Matt Beck drove in the tying and winning runs with a sharp single as the Post grabbed the lead at 7-6. Beck now has a career best 21 rbis topping his previous best of 17 which he totaled back in 2005. Matt has accomplished this remarkable feat in only 10 games, averaging just over 2 ribbys per game. His lifetime total of 182 rbis is by far the best of any Post player. The Post ran themselves out of any insurance runs when a double steal attempt was squashed by Castros alert defense. However, Charlie Archinal was vintage over the last four, giving up only 2 hits to the 14 batters he faced (.143 ba) as he got his 5th win of the year and 72nd of his Post career. The 701ers improved to 9-2, the first time since 2003 they have had that kind of record that late in the season. The win improved Manager Vinny Fiorillo's regular season record to 123-72 (.631 win pct.).

STATLINE

With 158 hits in 10 games in 2010 season, the 701ers are on pace to set all kinds of team records. In their 8 wins this year, they have averaged 17.8 hits per game and have won by an average of 8 runs . . . 3 times they have broken the 20 hit barrier, including a 31 hit onslaught vs The Recovery Room . . . Only twice have they gotten less than 10 hits in a game. 7 hits vs both St. Michaels (a 9 inning 5-4 win) and a 5-2 loss to Shortys and lefty Paul Brinkman . . . With their 4 homerun game vs the Old Timers the Post now has 8 for the year, but that is still 4 behind the record of 12 set back in 2004 . . . Matt Beck led the club with 4 homers followed by Bobby Nichols and his three blasts. The 2008 team had 10 homeruns. Brendan Cudmore had 4, one better than Danny Auricchio . . . with his 3 hit game vs the Old Timers Danny Auricchio now has 23 hits for the year and is riding a 21 game hitting streak. He is 4 hits shy of the all time Post record of 27 set by Scott Brennan back in 1997. Shaun Krutz is second on the list with 25 hits last year while Danny and Bobby Lopuch are tied for 3rd on the list with 24 hits in a season. Bobby had his back in 2006 while Danny got his 24 hits one year later . . . Statso . . . Matt Beck is tied with Shaun Krutz for the rbi lead with 19, 6 ribbys behind the all time record of 25 set by Danny Auricchio in 2006. Rich Auricchio holds the second spot with 25 (1999), followed by Scott Brennan 21 (1997) and Shaun Krutz 20 (2009) . . . Marty Tambasco's 2 ribbys in his last time set a personal season best of 11 passing his previous best of 9 set last year and in 2004 . . . Shaun Krutz now has 5 doubles for the year and this ties him with Rich Auricchio for the second spot for most doubles in a season. However, the number one spot belongs to Scott Brennan who set the record in 1997 when he had 8 doubles . . . Shaun Krutz extended his hitting streak to 24, while Aaron Kelly is tied with Danny Auricchio at 21 in a row . . .

Murderers Row

Matt Beck, Shaun Krutz, Danny Auricchio & Zo Fiorillo
In the 14 plus years that Diamond Notes has been covering the Post 701ers, he cannot remember a 4 homerun game by the local favorites. That memory has been jarred big time when 4 of the Post's best hitters went yard vs the Old Timers. With 2 out and no one on in the first it was Danny Auricchio crushing his 13th career homerun for the quick 1-0 Post lead. This homerun was a milestone in the history of the Post 701 as Danny passed his late, great Dad Rich Auricchio on the all time list to take over the number one spot in homeruns. Danny's 2nd career homer came in 2006 in a game vs Libers when his Dad hit his last Post home run. In addition to ranking as one of the best hitters in the AA League, Danny is also one of the best, if not the best fielding infielders. Dad is very proud! One of the original Brat Packers (and the only one left) Matt Beck is enjoying a career year. He is tied for the team lead in rbis with a career best 19 ribbys. With 4 games to go, Matt topped his personal best of 18 set back in 2008. His 3 run homer, which essentially put the game away in the 5th inning was his 11th career shot, and places him only one behind Rich Auricchio for second on the Post career list. Matt's 180 career rbis is 42 better than the runnerup. Shaun Krutz has done nothing but hit since joining the Post back in 2007. He carries a career average of .491 and has 5 lifetime homers in only 167 at bats thanks to his first inning homerun. Another vital kog in the Kiddi Korp link is the speedy and lethal Lorenzo Fiorillo. In only his fifth year as a Post 701er, Lorenzo has 6 lifetime home runs thanks to his 4th inning blast. Just to show that he is not all about the speed, Zo has a .427 career average, fourth on the all-time list. Not bad for a Kiddi Korp member.

Milestone Men

For 14 years Matt Beck has been the pulse of the team accumulating big hit after big hit and playing with a passion second to none. He is first on the all time Post list in at bats (570), doubles (29), rbis (180) and sac flies (18). He is second hits (207) and third in runs (125) and home runs (11). He joined the exclusive 200 hit club on May 26 vs Rockton House when he doubled leading off the third. This year he is hitting .433 with an incredible 19 rbis on only 13 hits.
Dan Auricchio has never hit below .407 in his 6 full years as a Post 701er. In his 6 years as a Post starter he has never scored less than 17 runs with a career total of 110 which ranks 4th on the all time list. He has never had less than 12 ribbys in a year and his 108 rbis place him 4th on the Post career list. His homerun in the 1st inning vs the Old Timers was his 13th while wearing the Post colors and put him in the number one spot all time. His homer per at bat ratio is 21.3 as compared with his Dad's 31.3 and Matt Beck's 51.8. Danny's milestone is well deserved and well respected.

In his 13 year Post career Charlie Archinal has put up some extroidinary numbers. He has a lifetime era of 2.19 with a win percentage of .732. His 586 strikeouts in 686 innings pitched averages out to .85 strikeouts per inning, a ratio that is unheard of in the Class AA softball league. When Charlie beat St. Michael's 5-4 on June 14 he captured his 70th lifetime win as a Post 701 and earned his recognition in the Post record books.

There would be no Post 701 softball team if not for the founding member, Nyle Nelson. Nyle hit a big milestone back on July 12 when he won career game #30 vs the Old Timers. Diamond Notes stats go back to 1997 and being that Nyle pitched for many years prior to 1997 it stands to reason that he has many more wins than 30. With that being said, Diamond Notes takes the time to honor the founding member on his accomplishment. With 300 innings pitched he carries a lifetime era of 4.50 and enjoyed his finest year back in 2000 when he sported a 4-2 record with a 1.71 era while holding the opposition to a .233 batting average. In the drive for their first title since 2002 Nyle is undefeated with a 4-0 record and a 5.64 era.

GAME 11 PHOTOS

Kangaroo Court Judge, the Honorable Vincent Fiorillo acknowledged Diamond Notes for a good game of photography (and the appropriate $1.00 fine ensued) and the Game 11 photos show why. The zoom lens on DN caught starter and winner Charlie Archinal firing a strike in the first with shortstop Bobby Lopuch looking on intently. That intensity is apparent when Loper got the force for out #2 in the second. Skipper Vinny Fiorillo is seen grabbing a pop out for the first out in the fifth. Holding on to a thin one run lead, Danny Auricchio made the play on an attempted bunt and got the runner at first thanks to a nice play by the Skipper, Vinny Fiorillo who hustled over to cover first. DN lens was right there to show that the umpire made the correct call. The red hot Matt Beck took one for the team when an errant Norbert Camacho pitch nailed the popular firstbaseman in the first inning. Kiddi Korp members Shaun Krutz and Aaron Kelly get congratulations from Bobby Lopuch as Vinny Fiorillo looks on following the end of the game. Misha Murdoch enjoys the game with a beer in his lounge chair while veteran Charlie Archinal shares some inside info with the son of Greybeard Founder Gavin Murdoch. Shaun Krutz is the focus of the Diamond Notes lens on this catch for the last out in the fifth. Norbert Camacho and Chicky, that hit machine for Castros, pose with Nyle Nelson for this Diamond Notes exclusive.

GAME 9 PHOTOS

Diamond Notes had a hard time keeping the moisture off the zoom lens on Thursday's game vs Cameo but DN did come up with some action shots of the Post's ace hurlers in action. Nyle Nelson came in the 6th inning and pitched two solid innings. Charlie Archinal went to 4-2 for the year and captured career win number 72 going 5 innings and allowing only two hits. With both Rick Jobin and Matt Beck AWOL Aaron Kelly wore the catcher's gear and was caught squatting behind the dish ready to catch a fast ball from Archinal in the third. Bobby Lopuch went 2 for 3 raising his average to .360 while scoring his 10th run of the year, the 13th straight year that he has hit double digits in runs scored. His 175 runs scored is 2nd on the all time list, 10 runs behind Scott Brennan. Danny Auricchio went 4 for 4 while increasing his average to .606, second only to Shaun Krutz and his .615 average. DN saw another sweet swing by "Krugger" as he sent a "Krutz Missle" for his 16th hit of the year. His three hits accounted for 2 runs scored and 3 ribbys in the big 17-3 victory over Cameo.

LAST OUT AWARD: BOBBY LOPUCH

All he has done over his 13 year Post career is hit .348 with 192 hits (3rd on the all time list) with 176 runs scored (2nd on the career list) and is only 4 rbis shy of becoming only the 5th Post player to reach the century mark. He has reached the double digit numbers in runs scored every year and always has an on base average in the .450 range, breaking the magical .500 mark three times. However, when Bobby Lopuch popped to third for the final out in the sixth inning he earned the distinction of delivering the Coors Cooler for game 11 on Wednesday.

2009 POST 701
After starting out slowly, going 2-5 over the first 7 games the 2009 version of the Post 701ers got hot in the second half, going 6-3 over the last nine to make the playoffs for the second straight year. However, for the second year in a row, they fell to Emerald Cinema in the first round of the playoffs. So, it's wait until 2010 for the quest for their first Championship since 2002. Many thanks to Donnie Krutz for his wonderful photo of the 2009 701ers.
