Countdowns

First practice scheduled for April 17 as Post looks for first title since 2002 . . . Squad looks to rebound from second straight opening round playoff game loss . . . 2010 version looks like 2009 with Jobin on roster from the start . . .

ARE THESE THREE THE KEY TO 2010?

With the first practice set for mid April it is not too early to begin thinking of the 2010 softball season. With the recent influx of youth which features the potent bats of Danny Auricchio, Shaun Krutz, Lorenzo Fiorillo and Aaron Kelly scoring does not figure to be a problem. The 2009 team hit .382 scoring 132 runs for an average of 8.25 runs per game. However, as it usually plays out, it's all about the pitching and the Post Skipper Vinny Fiorillo is hoping for big years from his rotation of Charlie Archinal, Nyle Nelson and Hap Hartig.

LOOKING FOR A BIG 2010

Charlie Archinal was the workhorse of the pitching staff in '09 as he went 5-3 with a 2.41 era and 40 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched. Owning a career record of 67-24 with a 2.10 era Archinal continues to anchor the staff as he enters his 13th year as a Post 701er. Nyle Nelson backed up Archinal with 32+ innings pitched and despite going 1-4 in 2009. Nelson showed his worth when he went 5+ innings against the division Champion Emerald Cinema in the last game of the regular season. Nyle gave up but 3 runs against Emerald and once again plays an important part in the pitching rotation. Hap Hartig enjoyed a comeback year before a knee injury derailed his resurgence. Through his first four appearances Hap pitched to a microscopic era of 0.54 in 13 innings going 2-0. Hartig's shot at a big 2010 may depend on a healthy right knee because when he is right, Hap has shown that he still has the skills to excell.

KIDDI KORP PROFILE

As the Post prepares for the upcoming 2010 season the youngest faction of the team (known as the "Kiddi Korp") will play an important part in the quest for a league title. Here is a brief profile on the five members known as the "Kiddi Korp."

Dan Auricchio

This young veteran of 5 years and founding member of the ever popular "Kiddi Korp" had a steller year in 2009 batting .413 with 18 runs scored, 19 hits and 19 rbis. Danny broke the 100 hit barrier in '09 and second in career homeruns with 11. Who is first? Danny's Dad, Rich who belted out 12 homers in essentually 9 years although he was active for 11 seasons. Danny also has 96 career ribbys and is but 4 shy of becoming only the fourth 701ers to hit the magic century mark.

Shaun Krutz

In his brief 3+ Post 701 career Shaun Krutz has compiled some amazing numbers, including a .457 career batting average which ties him the number one hitter of all time on the Post list, Scott Brennan. Shaun became the first Post player ever to join the 20-20-20 club when he scored 20 runs, totaled 25 hits and knocked in 20 in 2009. All this offense and he is arguably the best defensive outfielder in the league with a cannon for an arm. Shaun is one of the important members of the "Kiddi Korp" and another key to a sucessful 2010 season.

Aaron Kelly

Another new member of the "Kiddi Korp" Aaron Kelly won the prestigious "Rookie of the Year" Award in 2009 when he hit .465 with 20 hits and 18 runs scored. The speedy Kelly also stole 5 bases while leading the team with a .615 on base average. Aaron was one of three Post regulars who went through the year without striking out and was a major cog in the offensive machine in Skipper Fiorillo's lineup. While stationed in the outfield, the versitile Kelly can play any position in the infield in addition to help catch the 701 pitching staff.

Lorenzo Fiorillo

Quite possibly the fastest player in the Class AA Softball League, this Kiddi Korp member has a lifetime batting average of .420 in just under 4 years of service. Lorenzo Fiorillo stole a career high of 11 bases in 2009 bringing his career total to 22. Known for his speed, Lorenzo has shown some power with 4 homeruns in his brief career which happens to be 3 more than his Dad and team Skipper Vinny Fiorillo who has one HR. Lorenzo has done this in 252 less at bats, also.

Michael Carter

The youngest member of the Kiddi Korp, Michael Carter goes back much longer on the Post than any other of his fellow Baby Bombers. Known as a the Post 701 batboy back in the 90's, Michael has developed some power and quick wrists as he approaches his late teens. This was proven out last June 16 when Mike went yard and hit a long triple in a 3 for 3 performance vs Vern's Auto in a 19-6 Post romp. In only 32 career at bats, Michael has 6 extra base hits and carries a .625 slugging average to go along with a .313 lifetime batting average.

STATLINE

Matt Beck knocked in 16 runs in 2009, the second time he has done that in his career and his second best all time to his 2008 total of 18. Matt is the career leader in ribbys with 161, 23 more than runner-up, the late, great Rich Auricchio . . . Ray Fyfe missed the last 8 games of the regular season when he injured his quad against Z-Core back on June 9. Ray had just beat out a bunt for a hit when he got hurt . . . Shaun Krutz became the first Post player to join the 20-20-20 club when he scored a team leading 20 runs, got a team leading 25 hits and knocked in 25 runs, also a team best. With a .714 slugging pct, Shaun sported a .518 on base average while leading the team with a .510 batting average . . . Lorenzo Fiorillo stole 11 base in 2009 to lead the team while hitting .375. Lorenzo is a career .420 hitter and has scored 41 runs in 131 at bats, a run scored in every 3.2 AB's . . . The all-time Post leader in runs, Scott Brennan has scored 177 runs, one run for every 2.75 at bats . . . Marty Tambasco enjoyed his best year ever in hits with 15 while tying his career mark in ribbys with nine . . . Bobby Lopuch scored 11 runs in 2009, the 12th straight year that his runs scored has hit double digits . . . In five plus years, Danny Auricchio has scored 93 runs with his lowest total amount of runs scored in a year being 17. When he scores his 7th run in 2010 he will become only the 5th Post player to break the century mark . . . Mike Andrews is but 3 runs shy of the century mark in runs scored. Mike is 4th on the all-time list in hits with 162 while sporting a career batting average of .356 . . .

Charlie Archinal enjoyed another fine season for the Post 701ers in 2009. The ace right hander went 5-3 this past season with a 2.41 era and a whip of 1.10 (compared to a career whip mark of 1.03.. In 61 innings pitched, Charlie struck out 40 while hitting .348 with 7 runs scored and 5 rbis. Although Charlie got the loss in the second game of the 2009 Tournament, he allowed only two earned runs consistant with his career era of 2.10.

Skipper Vinny Fiorillo offered a toast in memory or Rich Auricchio and Johnny Merendo following an afternoon of softball at the Flint/Recorder Softball Tournament. Most of the Post 701 players played for the A-Team along with many friends who shared laughs and memories of two teammates who left us much too early. Check out 2009 A-Team for photos of that day's events.

GAME 16 PHOTOS

Diamond Notes caught some of your favorite Post players in action during the final regular season game in 2009 vs Emerald Cinema. Long time veteran starter Nyle Nelson threw a great game until tiring late. The DN lens focused on Double N throwing a strike in the 2nd inning. Matt Beck, who hit .375 with 16 rbis is seen at third base following a long run scoring triple. Charlie Archinal, who came in relief of Nelson in the 6th is seen getting the sign from catcher Rick Jobin as Vinny Fiorillo is set at second. Scott Brennan makes the catch in center with Bobby Lopuch gets the last out in the bottom of the 7th with the score tied at four. Danny Auricchio stole second after walking in the first and was caught by the DN lens on the steal, something that the Emerald catcher could not do.

LAST OUT AWARD: VINNY FIORILLO

He is coming off of another excellent season, batting .341 with 11 rbis, good for 4th on the team for the 2009 season. A career .341 hitter with 124 hits he shows no signs of slowing down. However, when the popular Skipper of the Post 701ers Vinny Fiorillo skied out to left for the last out vs Emerald he became the last "winner" of the prestigious "Last Out Award" for the 2009 season. The Skipper with have the complete off season to save up for the beer and ice as the Post takes the field some time in early May in 2010. This one's on you, Skip!

2008 POST 701
The 2008 version of the Post 701, with an infusion of youth and speed, made the playoffs for the first time in 4 years with an 11-4 record. Although they lost 7-5 to Emerald Cinema in the first round of the playoffs, skipper Vinny Fiorillo's crew looks for bigger and better things in 2009. Many thanks to contributing + photographer Lisa Brennan for her quality work. Check out the link Lisa's Playoff Photos for her photos from the Emerald Cinema game played on August 19.

However, for the second year in a row, they fell to Emerald Cinema in the first round of the playoffs. So, it's wait until 2010 for the quest for their first Championship since 2002. Many thanks to Donnie Krutz for his wonderful photo of the 2009 701ers.
