The shocking passing of Rich Auricchio on June 22 weighed heavy on the Post 701 softball community. Always vibrant and never dull, Rich's absence has left a void that will not be filled.

Intensity and passion were just part of the playing personality of Rich Auricchio. Here he is spotted on defense with Charlie Archinal ready to deliver a pitch. The next photo is a post game shot with catcher Rick Jobin from the 2007 season.

Even after he stopped playing full time following the 2005 season, Rich was a regular at every Post game. Rooting on son Danny, who took over the covetted #3 spot in the order that Rich held for the previous 9 years, Rich was always there in his fold out chair, positioning the defense and enjoying a post game beer with the players.

Always a force on the field, Rich was something else off it as well. The core of all the post game celebrations, Rich is seen immediately following the 2002 Championship with teammates Bobby Lopuch and Marty Tambasco

RICH AURICCHIO

Although Rich's life's contibutions go far beyond the softball diamond, there is no denying his accomplishments while wearing a Post 701 uniform. A lifetime .410 hitter, Rich became the 1st Post player to get 100 runs (he scored 100), 100 hits (he totaled 154) and is still the all-time Post leaders in rbis with 138. His 12 homers and 14 sacrifice flies are still the best Post marks. He was at his best in post-season play, averaging .560 during the 2002-2004 Post playoff series. He went 6 for 9 in the 2002 Championship year, scoring 4 runs, knocking in 10, while belting out two double and two homers. It was indeed fitting that Rich got the game winning hit for the 701ers only Championship title.
