Always the life of the party, and always a supportive teammate, John Merendo lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday, July 23. The last few months were trying ones for John, and throughout the pain and throughout the suffering, Johnny "Bananas" never complained and looked forward to next year, when he would be healthier and stronger. The Post 701 community is deeply saddened by John's passing, and Diamond Notes offers this page as a tribute to Johnny.
Popular with all of his teammates, John is spotted in these two photos with youngster Danny Aurichhio from the 2005 softball season, and with fellow Greybeard, Gavin Murdoch, from the 2004 season.
As a tribute to John, each member of the 2006 Post 701ers has a commemerative "JM" on their left sleeve. John was able to attend a practice this year, in April, and smacked some long shots, and actually played in Game 1 vs St. Michaels when he grounded out to second in his last plate appearance.
The popular Johnny Bananas is seen lining a basehit during the 2005 season, and in a photo with his fellow Greybeards from 2004. His fellow teammates include, from left to right, Ray Fyfe, Marty Tambasco, Gavin Murdoch, Vinny Fiorillo and Charlie Archinal
His passing, although not unexpected, still hit the team hard. In rememberance, the Post 701 softball team has a "JM" placed on their left sleeve. Diamond Notes caught veteran Gavin Murdoch with the JM on his sleeve, while the entire team signed a softball, to give to his fiancee, Teresa Colon. Bratpacker Mike Andrews is seen checking out the ball following his signature.
It was tough at the end, but Johnny Merendo never asked why and faced every day with dignity. The long fight against pancreatic cancer ended Sunday, July 23 for John, who passed away at age 53. A caring and giving individual, John'a boyant personality and funloving ways will be missed by all of those close to him. A personal favorite of Diamond Notes, here's to Johnny "Bananas" and his short, but wonderful life.
